Matthew Tsai is a percussionist whose interest is in the psychological effects and affects of music. His first encounter with percussion was in Vancouver with Martin Fisk in the West Vancouver Youth Band (WVYB) under the direction of Douglas Macaulay. He has also taught at the WVYB as a Percussion Assistant. Currently, he is finishing a Bachelors of Music at McGill studying under Aiyun Huang, Fabrice Marandola, and Shawn Mativetsky. He also has a minor concentration in Psychology. Matthew seeks to be involved in the development of the understanding of Music Psychology, and how this understanding can be applied to performance; and also to understand how music can be applied in the more general field of education.
Matthew also holds a Royal Conservatory of Music ARCT Performers Piano Practical qualification, and is experienced in privately teaching students ranging from RCM grade 4-10. He has also taught as a private tutor for high school math and English, RCM music theory, and as an instructor in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets.
