It is thanks to the vision and generosity of Seymour Schulich that the Catherine Thornhill Steele Chair in Music was established in 2006. Used each year to invite leading artists to perform and teach at the Schulich School of Music, former guests have included Andrew Dawes, Anton Kuerti, Jens Lindeman and many others. In past years, the Catherine Thornhill-Steele Chair has supported
thematic years featuring woodwinds, brass, early music and jazz. This year we are happy to present the Schulich Year of Contemporary Music. The Schulich School of Music has a great tradition of excellence in contemporary music in performance and composition, as well as theoretical, musicological and technological research. At a research university like McGill, where innovation and creativity are key, it is highly appropriate to turn the spotlight on the artists and composers who are transforming music in the 21st century.
