It teaches us how to understand and change our moods and negative abnormal emotions.\u00a0\u00a0 Thoughts that are negative, discouraging, and self-critical create feelings and moods that can halt your productivity, self-esteem, and happiness.\u00a0 Cognitive therapy can help us learn coping strategies to help us change our negative thinking patterns, reduce anxiety, and prepare us to play better.(Burns, 1999).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;text-align: left\"><strong><em>\u201cI\u2019ll never get into an orchestra\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;text-align: left\">&#8211; You stop practising and create a self-fulfilling prophecy from the negative thought<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left\"><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left\">More on how we think negatively<\/h4>\n<p>Your moods are created by your thoughts or \u201ccognitions.\u201d\u00a0 These thoughts are based on how we perceive and interpret things. \u00a0This includes what we say about someone, something, or to ourselves.\u00a0 We feel the way we do because of our thoughts and the dialogue we have with ourselves. \u00a0Our emotional reactions are based more on our thoughts than the actual things that are happening to us.\u00a0 Your thought creates the emotion and the emotion can have a positive or negative effect on your mood and the resulting ability to be positive or negative and continue.\u00a0 Negative thoughts and moods can make playing or practicing music seem impossible and it therefore becomes impossible.\u00a0 Negativity leads to more negativity and those thoughts start to become believable and crippling.\u00a0(Burns, 1999).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><strong>\u201cI\u2019m the worst person for playing in tune.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">&#8211; You avoid fixing it and putting in the time because it makes you feel even worse.\u00a0 What if I prove myself right?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><strong>\u201cI\u2019m never going to be good enough to be a professional.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">&#8211; You are frustrated and down and can\u2019t focus on practising.\u00a0 This simply blocks you from getting any better and fixing those things that would make you a professional.<\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_1129\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 270px\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1129\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2015\/04\/Books.jpg\" alt=\"Books\" width=\"270\" height=\"180\" \/><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\"><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Twisted Thinking<\/h4>\n<p>Negative thoughts that create emotional turmoil are almost always containing gross distortions.\u00a0 The thoughts might seem correct to you at the moment but they are often irrational or even wrong.\u00a0 This twisted thinking plays a major role in the negativity that prevents us from positive focus and improvement. \u00a0Your negative emotions are based on thoughts that are not accurate perceptions.\u00a0 Does the negativity allow you to play at your best?\u00a0 I think not.\u00a0 If the perceptions aren\u2019t accurate you need to be able see this and adjust your thinking.\u00a0 You can learn to deal with your moods, emotions and negative thinking.\u00a0 Cognitive behaviour therapy will help you recognize and eliminate the mental distortions that make you so upset and negative.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" title=\"Understand and conquer those negative thoughts\u2026\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/understand-and-conquer-those-negative-thoughts\/\">Learn how to\u00a0fix it!<\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>[toggle title=&#8221;Photos&#8221;]All photos sourced through Creative Commons. org<\/p>\n<p>Banana Therapy photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/james_nash\/2533278341\/\">James Nash<\/a>.
