Meditating everyday has led me to find old passions that have been forgotten\u2026my enjoyment of music has increased dramatically\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em>Matthew<br \/>\n______<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThrough the regular practice of Ascension-Meditation, I have been able to stop taking antidepressants and sleep medication, and gain a balance in my life. But more important, I have become literally addicted to the peaceful state of mind&#8230;\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em>Simon<\/p>\n<p>These are statements of participants of a five-week meditation course, which I taught at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University, Montreal, in February\/March 2017. The participants learned the techniques of Ascension Meditation.\u00a0What are these declarations based on? Beliefs? Wishful imagination? Facts? Could meditation have such a deep impact on a person\u2019s life after such a short time? If so, is there an explanation?<br \/>\nThe intention of this blog is to bring some light to these questions and link my personal experience as a musician, meditator and meditation teacher with scientific evidence and practical solutions.<br \/>\nAlexander Freund, Montreal, April 2017<\/p>\n<p>[toggle title=&#8221;Meditation and scientific research&#8221;]<br \/>\nAccording to Lin et al. (2007) more than 1500 publications have showed numerous\u00a0psychological and physiological effects of meditation.<br \/>\nKenny (2005) talks about more than 2000 studies that show the benefits of meditation, e.g. improving awareness and concentration and as coping strategy for anxiety and depression.<br \/>\n[\/toggle]<br \/>\nMeditation has become a very hot topic. Why?\u00a0One word:<\/p>\n<p><strong>STRESS.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[toggle title=&#8221;What is stress?&#8221;]<br \/>\nAccording to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.humanstress.ca\/stress\/understand-your-stress\/sources-of-stress.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Studies on Human Stress (CSHS)<\/a>\u00a0we all secrete stress hormones when\u00a0faced with (or anticipating) a situation that is either novel, unpredictable, threatens our ego, or lowers our sense of control.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>N<\/i><\/b><i>OVELTY &#8211;\u00a0Something you have not experienced before<\/i><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><b><i>U<\/i><\/b><i>NPREDICTABILITY &#8211;\u00a0Something you had no way of knowing it would occur<\/i><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><b><i>T<\/i><\/b><i>HREAT TO THE EGO &#8211; Something that calls your competence as a person into question<\/i><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><b><i>S<\/i><\/b><i>ENSE OF CONTROL LOWERED &#8211; Something that makes you feel you had little or no control over the situation<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; That\u2019s why sometimes we just go <em>N.U.T.S.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3814\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/cca207d232202d14f5f4a72f86603700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"736\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/cca207d232202d14f5f4a72f86603700.jpg 736w, https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/cca207d232202d14f5f4a72f86603700-300x256.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">[2]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">[\/toggle]<\/p>\n<p>It is an issue, which so unpleasantly connects all of us. We live in the age of smartphones, tablets and social media; times with unbearable amounts of communication, 20-30 or more emails per day with the sender\u2019s expectation to be answered within 10 minutes. The virtue of the Western world is to produce \u201cwinners\u201d, \u201cdoers\u201d and \u201cachievers\u201d, every day\u2019s pace is fast, we rush through the increasing competition for skills, grades, academic titles and gathering of opportunities to build up a curriculum in order to be on top of the list for the merciless job hunt.<br \/>\nCareer, grants, success and reputation seem to be bigger priorities than wellbeing, health and happiness or simply being at peace.<\/p>\n<p>[infobox color=&#8221;#678250&#8243; textcolor=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">The glorious motto for our overachieving society is \u201cWork hard!\u201d &#8211; What happened to \u201cEnjoy\u201d?<br \/>\nWhat happened to &#8220;Relax&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>[\/infobox]<\/p>\n<p>Society is a reflection of the educational system as well as education is a reflection of society. As this blog is part of a university research project, let\u2019s have a look into our environment as students and professionals:<\/p>\n<p>The rates for anxiety-mood disorders among college students are higher than in the general population while psychological distress is associated with disability and lower academic achievement (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1080\/00050067.2010.482109\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stallman<\/a>, 2010).<br \/>\nThe study of <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.2202\/1949-6605.5037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kitzrow<\/a> (2009) states an increase in the severity of mental health problems among students. Eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, insomnia, depression, anxiety and even suicide attempts are increasing psychological and behavioral issues.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aucccd.org\/assets\/documents\/aucccd%202016%20monograph%20-%20public.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2016 Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors Annual Survey <\/a>reported an increase in anxiety and depression between 2012 and 2016 (image).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3812 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/AUCCD.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/AUCCD.png 640w, https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/AUCCD-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/AUCCD-358x200.png 358w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>[3]<\/p>\n<p>[toggle title=&#8221;More Anxiety among musicians&#8221;]<br \/>\nA very recent study (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1177\/0305735614564910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vaag, 2015<\/a>) compared the symptoms of anxiety, depression and psychological stress of 1,607 Norwegian musicians with those of 2,550 workers of the general Norwegian workforce. Psychological distress was reported in 18% of the musicians in comparison to 8% of the workforce, which indicates that anxiety and depression were significantly more prevalent among musicians.<br \/>\n[\/toggle]<\/p>\n<p>It seems obvious that more and more people <em>become aware<\/em> of the necessity for a permanent and effective solution and coping strategy for stress and anxiety.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>Awareness &#8211; Mindfulness<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Awareness means to be conscious about\u00a0something.<br \/>\n<strong>Mindfulness<\/strong> \u2013 a word, which increasingly pops up in publications. Mindfulness actually means awareness.<br \/>\n[tabs]<\/p>\n<p>[tab title=&#8221;MINDFULNESS&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ; <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1177\/1073191105283504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baer et al., 2006<\/a>) measures five factors of mindfulness:<\/p>\n<p>[\/tab]<br \/>\n[tab title=&#8221;<em>OBSERVING<\/em>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOBSERVING &#8211; defined in terms of noticing or attending to\u00a0internal and external experiences\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1177\/1073191105283504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baer et al, 2006<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/tab]<br \/>\n[tab title=&#8221;<em>DESCRIBING<\/em>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;DESCRIBING \u2013 defined in\u00a0terms of labeling internal experiences with words\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1177\/1073191105283504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baer et al., 2006<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/tab]<br \/>\n[tab title=&#8221;<em>ACTING WITH AWARENESS<\/em>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;ACTING WITH AWARENESS \u2013 defined in terms of attending to one\u2019s activities of the moment (opposite of acting on automatic pilot)\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1177\/1073191105283504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baer et al., 2006<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/tab]<br \/>\n[tab title=&#8221;<em>NON-JUDGING OF INNER EXPERIENCE<\/em>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;NON-JUDGING OF INNER EXPERIENCE<em> \u2013 <\/em>defined in terms of taking a no evaluative stance toward thoughts and feelings\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1177\/1073191105283504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baer et al., 2006<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/tab]<br \/>\n[tab title=&#8221;<em>NON-REACTIVITY TO INNER EXPERIENCE<\/em>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;NON-REACTIVITY TO INNER EXPERIENCE<em> \u2013 <\/em>defined in terms\u00a0of allowing thoughts and feelings to come and go, without getting caught up in or carried away by them\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1177\/1073191105283504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baer et al., 2006<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/tab]<br \/>\n[\/tabs]<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is Mindfulness? For some it conjures up images of bearded yogis sitting on mountaintops in mysterious, far-off places like Tibet. Others think you need to be seriously religious to be able to meditate \u2013 or that meditation takes too much effort for a \u201cnormal\u201d person like you&#8230;or\u2026maybe\u2026all that isn\u2019t actually true?<br \/>\nAll the myths and misconceptions about meditation out there have very little to do with what this practical tool is really all about.<br \/>\nAlthough meditation has constituted a part of many religious practices (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guilford.com\/books\/Principles-and-Practice-of-Stress-Management\/Lehrer-Woolfolk-Sime\/9781606230008\/contents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barlow, 2007<\/a>) the practice of meditation itself is not a religious act.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[infobox color=&#8221;#678250&#8243; textcolor=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">You don\u2019t need to embrace any specific religion or belief system in order to meditate. Meditation is a practical tool to experience\u00a0life in a mindful state.<\/p>\n<p>[\/infobox]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Which forms of meditation exist?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>There exist numerous forms of traditions, teachings and techniques. Some traditions are more rigid than others, some meditation techniques require a lot of discipline, others are so simple and effortless that children can master them and put them to use. Some are repetitive; others are mechanical; some require strict postures while others can be done at any moment and any place with closed or open eyes. All of them have one thing in common:<br \/>\n<strong>They are a <em>PRACTICE<\/em>\u2026 when practiced on a daily basis they guide the attention inwards and cultivate the awareness of the still and silent space within.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3811 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/6903507494_c4b55b3588.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/6903507494_c4b55b3588.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/6903507494_c4b55b3588-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/6903507494_c4b55b3588-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">[4]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guilford.com\/books\/Principles-and-Practice-of-Stress-Management\/Lehrer-Woolfolk-Sime\/9781606230008\/contents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barlow (2007<\/a>) classifies meditation into \u201cconcentrative\u201d and \u201cnon- concentrative\u201d techniques. A concentrative technique directs the attention to a repetitive stimulus (e.g., a mantra) while a \u201cnon- concentrative technique expands the meditator\u2019s field of attention to include as much of his or her conscious mental activity as possible.\u201d(e.g. mindfulness)<\/p>\n<p>[accordion multiopen=&#8221;true&#8221;]<br \/>\n[toggle title=&#8221;<strong>Mindfulness Meditation<\/strong>&#8221; state=&#8221;opened&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mindfulness Meditation<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/full-catastrophe-living-using-the-wisdom-of-your-body-and-mind-to-face-stress-pain-and-illness\/oclc\/20490665\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jon Kabat-Zinn (1990<\/a>) describes Mindfulness as the non-judgmental, compassionate\u00a0awareness of present moment\u00a0experiences.<\/p>\n<p>[\/toggle]<br \/>\n[toggle title=&#8221;<em>Breathing<\/em>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Breathing and body-awareness exercises<\/em> &#8211; it teaches to consciously shift the attention from the movement of the mind to awareness of body parts or functions, for example the breath.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CLvPhzNuxE4\u00a0\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CLvPhzNuxE4\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/toggle]<br \/>\n[toggle title=&#8221;<em>Vipassana<\/em>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhamma.org\/en\/about\/vipassana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vipassana<\/a><\/em> is a way of self-transformation through self-observation, one of India&#8217;s most ancient techniques of meditation.<\/p>\n<p>[\/toggle]<br \/>\n[toggle title=&#8221;<em>Mindfulness-Based Stress-Reduction<\/em>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<p><em>Mindfulness-Based Stress-Reduction (MBSR <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/full-catastrophe-living-using-the-wisdom-of-your-body-and-mind-to-face-stress-pain-and-illness\/oclc\/20490665\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kabat-Zinn, 1990<\/a><em>)<\/em> \u2013 \u00a0consists of a body scan, mindful (Hatha) yoga, and sitting meditation. It aims to improve mindfulness and reduce the perceived stress-level. MBSR is\u00a0the most studied form of mindfulness training in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>[\/toggle]<br \/>\n[toggle title=&#8221;<strong>Zen<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0state=&#8221;opened&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The practice of Chan\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zen-buddhism.net\/practice\/zen-meditation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zen meditation<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0(Chan=Chinese, Zen=Japanese) is the core of Zen Buddhism. It incorporates both concentration (<em>samatha<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 calming the mind) and mindfulness (<em>vipassana<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 insight into nature). Many aspects of Zen practice\u00a0are essentially mindfulness practices (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guilford.com\/books\/Principles-and-Practice-of-Stress-Management\/Lehrer-Woolfolk-Sime\/9781606230008\/contents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barlow, 2007<\/a>).\u00a0Lin et al., (2008) describe Chan meditation as a practice \u201cto be mindful of both inner mental states and outer surroundings of the present moment, with a calm and non-judgmental attitude towards them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[\/toggle]<br \/>\n[toggle title=&#8221;<strong>Mantra Meditation<\/strong>&#8221; state=&#8221;opened&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Mantra Meditation: A mantra is a sound, a word or a sentence that is an integral part of the practice (e.g. <em>Om, Om Shanti etc.<\/em>). The mantra is the focus of the meditation and is mentally repeated (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guilford.com\/books\/Principles-and-Practice-of-Stress-Management\/Lehrer-Woolfolk-Sime\/9781606230008\/contents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barlow, 2007<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>[\/toggle]<br \/>\n[toggle title=&#8221;<em>Transcendental Meditation<\/em>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mum.edu\/about-mum\/transcendental-meditation-technique\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Transcendental Meditation (TM) <\/em><\/a><em>\u2013<\/em>a mantra-meditation based on the ancient Vedic tradition of enlightenment in India, dating back 5,000 years. It was introduced to the Western world in the 1960\u2019s by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, With over 700 published studies in over 160 professional scientific journals since the 1970s one of the most scientifically researched forms of meditation (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1080\/87568225.2011.556947\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Burns et al., 2011<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>[\/toggle]<br \/>\n[toggle title=&#8221;<em>Ascension Meditation<\/em>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<p><em>Ascension Meditation<\/em> \u2013 A practice of individualized mantras based on <em>Acknowledgement, Gratitude, Love and Compassion<\/em>, rooted in the Vedic tradition and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali &#8211; a teaching that helps to \u201cgrasp the intricacies of Yoga\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/241276720_An_overview_of_the_Yoga_Sutras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bhavanani, 2010<\/a>). This practice has a a mindfulness aspect and cultivates a relationship with inner stillness and peace, it is a closed and open eyes practice.<\/p>\n<p>[\/toggle]<br \/>\n[\/accordion]<br \/>\nNote: These are examples with no\u00a0emphasis on order or impact. Sufficient rest is a highly effective technique for reducing stress and restoring health and vitality to the body. Research on transcendental Meditation has shown that during mantra meditation, body and mind enter a state of profound rest. Rest is measured in Oxygen consumption, which can be lowered during 20\u201330 minutes of meditation to a degree ordinarily reached after 6\u20137 hours of sleep (image).<\/p>\n<p>[toggle title=&#8221;<strong>What does meditation cause in my body?<\/strong>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<p>To show two detailed examples of scientific findings let\u2019s\u00a0have a look at\u00a0the parts in our brain related to stress and emotions, the amygdala and the hippocampus.<br \/>\nThe amygdala is recognized as one of the most important limbic structures in prevailing models of stress states. It receives information from sensory modalities and connects and reports to other subcortical structures. It \u201cmediates stress-related behavioral and physiological effects such as stress-hormone release, blood pressure elevation and facial expression of fear \u201c(<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1146\/annurev.neuro.23.1.155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LeDoux, 2000<\/a>).<br \/>\nA study (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1093\/scan\/nsp034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">H\u00f6lzel et al., 2010<\/a>) that compared a meditation group to a non-meditation control group found, following the meditation intervention, that participants in the meditation group reported significantly reduced perceived stress, which correlated positively with decreases in amygdala gray matter density as had been predicted prior to the study The more participants\u2019 stress levels decreased, the greater the decrease of gray matter density in the amygdala. (2011)<\/a> found significant increases in gray matter concentration (density) of the left hippocampus in the meditation group after an 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Release-intervention while no significant change was observed in the control group. This confirms that structural changes in this brain region are possible and even detectable within 8 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>This is a remarkable discovery as the general trend in the adult brain is progressive loss of grey matter density, which is associated with several pathological conditions like memory loss and major depression (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/S0006-3223(00)00994-X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sheline, 2000<\/a>).\u00a0Differences in regional gray matter are associated with performance abilities (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.0502441102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Milad et al., 2005<\/a>); the finding of increased volume through MBSR\u00a0in the\u00a0hippocampal region suggests improved function in regulating emotional responding as well as in the learning and memory process. The demanding music business challenges artists starting from an age on way before achieving professionalism. We are constantly exposed to irregularity, lack of sleep, emotional ups and downs and unpredictable physical and mental borderline experiences interchanging with enthusiastic outbursts:<\/p>\n<p>[toggle title=&#8221;\u201dDaily life of music students and professional musicians\u201d&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Developing skills in countless procrastination-practice-hours,<br \/>\nCompetitions,<br \/>\nAuditions,<br \/>\nExams,<br \/>\nInjuries,<br \/>\nConcerts,<br \/>\nMore practicing,<br \/>\nEndless traveling on tours,<br \/>\nComparing yourself with the one who is \u201csooo much more talented\u201d,<br \/>\nQuestioning skills,<br \/>\nMore practicing,<br \/>\nFatigue,<br \/>\nAgain auditioning,<br \/>\nAdvancing to the finals,<br \/>\nPracticing long tones until 2am,<br \/>\nNot advancing to the second round,<br \/>\nPlaying the most satisfying concert until that moment,<br \/>\nSudden strong anxiety attacks during a concert,<br \/>\nComplete overload of academic assignments,<br \/>\nBeginning the practice routine at 6am,<br \/>\nToo many ensemble credits to fulfill,<br \/>\nNo time for practicing,<br \/>\nWinning an audition,<br \/>\nNo time for sleep,<br \/>\nGoing N.U.T.S.<br \/>\n\u2026 etc. [\/toggle]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>Does that sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3816 alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/mark-twain-worried-quote.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"593\" height=\"691\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/mark-twain-worried-quote.jpg 593w, https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/files\/2017\/03\/mark-twain-worried-quote-257x300.jpg 257w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 593px) 100vw, 593px\" \/>[8]<\/p>\n<p>We are so used to our emotional rollercoaster that ongoing comments in our head seem to be completely natural; <em><br \/>\n\u201cI am not good enough\u201d,<br \/>\n\u201cSo-and-so has more talent\u201d,<br \/>\n\u201cI can\u2019t\u201d,<br \/>\n\u201cWill I ever be able to play this?\u201d &#8230;etc.<br \/>\n<\/em>These internal comments seem so natural that eventually we don\u2019t even notice them anymore, as well as we don\u2019t notice when we judge ourselves by our musical outcome and its recognition and when we limit our self-definition to our musical achievements.<br \/>\nThe results are often lack of motivation, performance anxiety, insomnia and depression and in many cases simply the end of enjoyment and fun\u00a0\u2013 and eventually the end of a promising career.<br \/>\nA part from meditation there are other coping strategies for stress and anxiety, for example Autogenic Training, Biofeedback Training, Exercise Therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guilford.com\/books\/Principles-and-Practice-of-Stress-Management\/Lehrer-Woolfolk-Sime\/9781606230008\/contents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barlow, 2007<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[infobox color=&#8221;#678250&#8243; textcolor=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Contrary to cognitive-behavioral treatment, the goal of meditation is not to \u2018challenge\u2019 or \u2018change\u2019 dysfunctional thoughts and undesired feelings, but rather to observe their rise and fall with an open attitude (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1177\/0305735607080840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lin et al., 2007<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>[\/infobox]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[toggle title=&#8221;\u201dEffects of Meditation on Performance Anxiety\u201d&#8221; state=&#8221;opened&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>A study conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1177\/0305735607080840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lin et al. (2007)<\/a> investigated the effects of Chan meditation on musical performance anxiety and musical performance quality as well as the relation between performance and anxiety, comparing a meditation group with a non-meditation control group. The meditation group demonstrated a significant decrease in performance anxiety and a measurable increase in performance quality.<\/p>\n<p>[\/toggle]<br \/>\n<em>[toggle title=&#8221;Remember some of\u00a0the benefits mentioned before:&#8221; state=&#8221;opened&#8221;]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Deeper rest,<br \/>\nBetter memory,<br \/>\nEmotional balance<br \/>\nMore concentration,<br \/>\nLess stress and anxiety,<br \/>\nDevelopment of a non-judgmental awareness of the present moment,<br \/>\n&#8230;etc.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>[\/toggle]<\/em><br \/>\nAren\u2019t these exactly the qualities we explicitly need to make music on a high level?<br \/>\nImagine how your daily life and work as a musician could look like with a practical tool like meditation, which you can use on flights, in the bus to the school, walking in the park, waiting for the train, before class or rehearsal or even during the concert!<br \/>\nAt this point I&#8217;d like to suggest to have a look at my McGill colleague Marina Thibeault&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/the-art-of-zen-music-playing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog: The Art of Zen Playing.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And more, what effect could this have in our schools?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Quiet Time \u2013 meditation in schools<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1080\/87568225.2011.556947\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Burns et al. (2011)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.questia.com\/library\/journal\/1G1-336280970\/effect-of-the-transcendental-meditation-program-on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colbert et al. (2013)<\/a>\u00a0describe <em>\u201cQuiet Time\u201d<\/em>, a program study that has been conducted in inner-city high schools, which involved teaching Transcendental Meditation to all students, staff, and administrators who then would meditate together twice a day for 15 minutes.<br \/>\nResearch on the Quiet Time program demonstrated<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Reduced stress levels<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Improved mental and physical health for both students and teachers<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Decrease in school violence<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Increased self-concept <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Improvement in the quality of sleep<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.theatlantic.com\/assets\/media\/files\/quiet-time-white-paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quiet Time Program Report 2016<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>21% Increases in graduation rates (Education 133 (4): 495-500, 2013)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>10% improvement in test scores and GPA (Education 131: 556\u2013565, 2011)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>40% reduction in psychological distress, including stress, anxiety and depression (American Journal of Hypertension 22(12): 1326-1331, 2009)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Reduced ADHD symptoms and symptoms of other learning disorders (Mind &amp; Brain: The Journal of Psychiatry 2 (1): 73-81, 2011)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Reduction in teacher burnout and perceived stress (Permanante Journal 18 (1): 19-23, 2014)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[toggle title=&#8221;Video: Meditation in schools&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"School replaces detention with meditation\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Adg-S2hY07w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>[\/toggle]<\/p>\n<p>Our schools and universities are in need of effective coping strategies for stress and anxiety, which are preventive and easily accessible and applicable.\u00a0Again, considering the benefits found in the Quiet Time program, imagine, which impact could or would it have on the personal level and the academic outcome, if the educational institutions would offer meditation to students and faculty as additional option of growth.<\/p>\n<p>The Guildhall School of Music is one example of universities who started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2011\/jun\/16\/mindfulness-meditation-music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pilot projects<\/a>\u00a0involving mindfulness into the daily activities.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>OMMMm&#8230;Of Music, Meditation,\u00a0McGill, &amp; me<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Many of the stressful experiences described in this blog are familiar to me; in fact, they were every day companions for many years. I was very much affected by the negative energy as one can find in many orchestras. Also, more than 10 years of extensive international concert tours got me to the limit of what my body and my mind were capable of.<br \/>\nIn search for a solution, I learned to meditate in 2010. As a musician it was easy to understand what a <em>daily practice<\/em> is, so I just did it, every day, since then.<br \/>\nI stopped judging myself and accepted the circumstances in my life for what they were. I stopped getting angry or disappointed when things did not coincide with my expectations or plans and eventually I started to make nothing more important than my own peace. During a\u00a0six-month retreat in Spain I practiced\u00a0Yoga twice a day and meditated for 180 days. Since then I have taught Ascension Meditation in Mexico, Germany, USA, Canada and Spain.<br \/>\nAs a music professor I have applied meditation in courses and masterclasses with musicians\u00a0and opera singers and can truly confirm the benefits, which were found in the\u00a0studies mentioned in this blog.<br \/>\nSince 2005\u00a0I have performed\u00a0more than a\u00a0thousand\u00a0concerts in five continents with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8j14xF7GRkM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">M5 MEXICAN BRASS<\/a>. Touring is very demanding\u00a0and now I am 13 years older, yet\u00a0I feel more comfortable and effortless on stage than ever before. Trust your intuition and the old martial arts proverb &#8220;When the student is ready the teacher will appear&#8221;. You will know what suits you best on your quest.<br \/>\nOne thing is certain &#8211; you\u00a0should\u00a0meditate with whatever practice resonates with you. When you learn to take your attention inwards you will become aware of an inner knowingness, a momentum when decisions &#8220;are made by themselves&#8221;.
