Is it possible it\u2019s related to menopause?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">These are real-life questions I have heard asked in hushed tones, from singer friends to students of mine &#8211; singers of all ages and at all stages of their career. Taboo keeps these conversations private and often full of shame. Is it my technique? Am I complaining? Do all menstruating\/menopausal people go through this? Am I weak? What am I doing wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">If you&#8217;ve asked these questions, you are not alone. Science has asked the same questions. They also colour the timbre of an individual voice (431).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:71px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">The voice is made up of three parts: the <strong>vibratory body<\/strong> (vocal folds in the larynx), <strong>respiration<\/strong> (breath) and <strong>resonators<\/strong> (throat, nasal and mouth cavities). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue reading for background information about hormones and how they work! They secrete in frequent little bursts which increases how much hormone is being released and circulated throughout the body. It sends a neural signal to the adrenal medulla which then releases epinephrine and norepinephrine. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#656a70\">Some glands monitor levels of various elements in the blood. These glands then decide if the concentration of their element needs to be rebalanced in the blood. If so, the gland will release a hormone.&nbsp;These glands and their hormones work to keep the body in balance (called <strong>homeostasis<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#636a70\">Chain-reaction or stimulation by hormone: one endocrine gland releases a hormone which then causes another gland to respond and release their own hormone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:89px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color\" id=\"create-a-page-jump\">Now, let\u2019s start at the very beginning: first step, puberty! <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:66px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right has-medium-font-size\"><em>\u201cThe hormonal climate determines the sex of the voice\u201d (Abitbol 1999, 433).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">These changes are experienced by most humans, with a few exceptions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">(This blog will address phenotypical development. The use of the XX \/ XY and female \/ male binaries does not encompass the full variety of human anatomy or gender, but they can be useful to understand different experiences of puberty and vocal development.&nbsp;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table aligncenter is-style-regular\"><table class=\"has-background has-fixed-layout\" style=\"background-color:#f3f4f5\"><thead><tr><th>XX body (female)<\/th><th>XX body (male)<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Puberty occurs between the ages of 8-13 on average.<\/td><td>Puberty occurs between the ages of 9-13 on average<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>No Adam&#8217;s apple (the thyroid and cricothyroid membrane don&#8217;t change much).<\/td><td>Adam&#8217;s apple forms because of developed thyroid cartilage.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Vocal muscle stays narrow and supple, thickening only a little.<\/td><td>Muscular and mucosal layers of the vocal folds thicken; the folds lengthen and widen.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>The mucosa become hormone-dependent (on estrogen and progesterone), mirroring the effects these same hormones have on the cervical mucosa. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/mpbs\/2021\/04\/10\/menstrual-cycle\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4949\">PMS<\/a> and PMVS)<\/td><td>Breaking voice: can last 1-5 years. Increased testosterone and dihydrotestosterone grow the laryngeal ligaments and muscles. This leads to cracking and top notes dropping.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Abitbol 1999, 434; Hari Kumar 2016, 591)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default has-border-color has-black-color has-text-color\" style=\"border-color:#abb8c3\"><blockquote><p><em>Historical perspective: the Castrati<\/em><br>Before reaching puberty, boys were castrated and therefore would not develop testosterone. This means the voice remained in the same boy\/adult female range, while the rest of the body grew into an adult male musculoskeleton (increased lung capacity, cardiovascular apparatus and muscle mass). This gave castrati a large range (3-4 octaves), large lung capacity and power.<\/p><cite>(Abitbol 1999, 426)<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color\">Menstrual cycle hormones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">My voice often gets tired when &#8220;Aunt Flo&#8221; comes to town. What could this be? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">The most common hormonal change affecting the voice happens during the menstrual cycle. For many singers, these hormonal changes and their symptoms happen monthly. Sadly, it&#8217;s rarely spoken about because talking about women&#8217;s bodies is often still taboo.
