While singing on the exhalation the \u201cV\u201d closes to form an \u201cI\u201d. The opening and closing of the folds allows for vibration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a><em>Reinke\u2019s space<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(or lamina propria) is the layer between the muscle and the surface cells of the folds. The kinds of cells that make up this layer are crucial to normal vocal fold vibration (Thibeault 2005, 148). YouTube.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-9de73ee9-87d5-42ff-af16-b81f65e9e505\"><li>Pitch is changed by the shortening and lengthening of the vocal folds.<\/li><li>Shorter folds = lower pitch; longer folds = higher pitch (Abitbol 1999, 431).<\/li><li>Watch the folds elongate as the voice gets higher!<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#246987\"><em>Fun things to know:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>The larynx is placed between the fourth and sixth vertebrae.<\/li><li>Glandular cells are what hydrate, lubricate and humidify (built in humidifiers!) &#8211; the vocal folds do not have any glandular cells on their free edge, but there are some surrounding the folds. This hydration is important to vocal health.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Respiration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The breath is the \u201cpower source of the vibration\u201d. One can breathe without making sound but cannot make sound without air!&nbsp;Expiratory flow or energy is controlled by the brain. This energy is what controls the voice\u2019s \u201cintensity, its tone, and its regularity\u201d (Abitbol 1999, 430).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Resonators<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The resonating chamber is made up of the pharynx, the soft palate, the sinuses, the nasal fossae and the postnasal space (the nasal, mouth and throat cavities). This chamber turns sound into voice and creates the vocal colour.
