Collaborate with an SR Student

Welcome all musicians!

The Sound Recording Area at McGill University has a long history of successful collaborations with musicians at McGill and in the greater MontrĂ©al area. If you’re interested in recording with us, this document outlines the range and limitations of the services we offer.

EXPERIMENTAL RECORDING SESSIONS (audio only)

No money should change hands under these collaborations.

The Sound Recording students need to complete experimental recording projects for their classwork. Most of the time, a high-level product is the result of these recording sessions. The benefit to the Sound Recording student is the opportunity to experiment. The benefit to the artist is a free recording session.

While most of these sessions are very successful, we can not guarantee a final product and we can not guarantee that a student will be available to take your session. Certainly worth a shot!

Student Recording sessions are limited to Sept. 1st – May 1st, there are no summer opportunities.

All genres are very welcome. You can contact the students by filling out this form.

When you make your request, you might get a response from an undergraduate (“qualifying-year”) student working in McGill’s Clara Hall & Studio B or an M.Mus. student who can work in any of McGill’s halls or studios.

PROFESSIONAL DEMO RECORDINGS (McGill Students only)

These must be booked through the Production Office. (under “Other Recordings”), Fees apply.

If you need a guaranteed, on-time, high-quality professional demo recording, this is the best option. You will be working with an M.Mus. student in one of McGill’s halls or recording studios.

It is not possible to contact the Sound Recording students directly for a paid demo recording. If you would like to work with a specific Sound Recording student, you can request them when you make your booking.

MCGILL CONCERT RECORDING AND LIVE SOUND

You must book them through the Production Office. (under “Internal Concert Recording Services”)

It is not possible to contact the Sound Recording students directly for these services. If you would like to work with a specific Sound Recording student, you can request this when you make your booking.
