In Memoriam — Sanford Sylvan (1953-2019)

Renowned baritone and beloved voice teacher Sanford Sylvan died suddenly at his Manhattan home on January 29, 2019. In addition to Juilliard, where he began teaching in 2012 and became chair of the voice faculty in 2018, Sylvan was also on the Bard Conservatory faculty and had previously been on the faculty of McGill University

Sanford Sylvan loved singing in virtual acoustics which our research team prepared for the VIRTUAL SALON concert at Live @ CIRMMT (Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology) in McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. His voice carried beautifully through the space, resonating with the power and clarity of operatic acoustics we re-created for him in the Multimedia Room. Sanford seemed to be gliding the acoustics, immersed in the MMR space.

We present this video snippet from the VIRTUAL SALON rehearsal of Sanford Sylvan with Tom Beghin on February 3^rd, 2012, recorded as a simple spontaneous video documentation, with Sanford’s permission. During the Virtual Salon concerts over two evenings (Feb 3 and Feb 4) Sanford Sylvan performed the following 5 Lieder accompanied by Tom Beghin on fortepiano:
